Hope :: Selfishness vs. Self-Respect

The following words are not words that I came up with. I read them and felt the need to share them here with you.

selfishness is putting the wants of yourself over the needs of others

self-respect is putting the needs of yourself over the wants of others

one is disregarding others, one is taking care of yourself

These are words that I needed to read. It’s something that I’ve needed to come to terms with for a long time.

I have a hard time telling people ‘no’.

The biggest reason: if I don’t step up, then someone else will need to do so. My thought process is that if I can do something then I should.

Which, yes, I know what you’re thinking: that’s probably a good thing…

Until it’s not.

I get to the point where I’m completely burned out. I continue to say ‘yes’ because it’s what’s now expected and I like to be there for people.

The problem? I become resentful.

Burn out is… not fun.

Burn out leads to depression. It leads to exhaustion.

Saying ‘yes’ may have become the norm. However, it’s never too late to change things around.

I spoke with the right people at work. Things are now looking up.

Taking care of me is not selfish. It’s respecting myself enough to say ‘enough is enough’.

I hope these words give you some encouragement as you navigate the waters of life.
