Hope :: Sometimes it’s Okay to Procrastinate

Hey, y’all! Sorry for the late update.

Today, I was busy, and then I had to actually go to work. I realized ten minutes before leaving for work that I hadn’t yet written my post. I had to decide: am I going to sit down and write a sub-par post now, or should I put it off until I get home from work?

As you can tell, I decided to put it off until I got home from work.

I want to tell you: sometimes it’s okay to put things off. We get so caught up in schedules that we race to get things done, even if we end up producing something of poor quality or give ourselves a mental breakdown.

If I had tried to type a message earlier, it probably would have been fairly grammatically correct, but the content would have been superficial, at best. Also, I wouldn’t have had this great topic to write about!

Right now, I’m giving you permission to take a pause and allow yourself to procrastinate a little.

If what you need to do will mess with someone else, communicate with them and make sure they’re okay with you putting it off. If there’s a specific deadline, work with them to meet that deadline rather than running yourself ragged trying to do it all on your own.

Communication is key, as is setting reasonable and attainable goals. Procrastinating is okay sometimes, but you have to be careful to not let it become a consistent habit. You also have to be sure to return to whatever it is you’re putting off within a reasonable amount of time.

Sometimes depression and anxiety get in the way and a day-long procrastination can turn into a month(s)-long procrastination. Sometimes pushing through is what we need to do.

Use proper judgment when deciding whether or not procrastination is a possibility.

For this post, putting it off may have been a little inconvenient for some readers (I’m sorry I made you wait!), but it was necessary for my mental state and for the quality of my writing. When it came to figuring out why an account wasn’t letting me pay my bill, it was something that couldn’t be procrastinated without bad consequences (I could have lost all of my belongings in storage! 😬).

So, the next time you have to choose between two (or more) options, consider who else will be affected by your decision, which option is more necessary right now, and then stick to your choice without feeling guilty for taking care of you.
