Hope :: Running on Empty

I am a people-pleaser. I always have been, but I’m hoping I won’t always be…

There’s nothing wrong with wanting the people around you to be happy and successful. The issue comes in when you sacrifice yourself and you own joy and peace to please other people.

Yes, life sometimes comes with sacrifice. Sometimes we do sacrifice our own pleasure or wants momentarily to give someone else what they need.

Being a people-pleaser, however, is something entirely different. When you’re a people-pleaser, you’re often running on empty because you’ve given away every single part of yourself. You don’t have the energy to even think about yourself much less actually do anything for yourself.

When you reach that state of emptiness, you’re no longer able to help anyone anymore, especially yourself.

Did you know it’s not a bad thing to put yourself first sometimes? I’ve talked before about ‘thinking of others as better than yourself’, but that doesn’t mean you should never take a pause and focus on yourself.

If you’re driving a car that’s almost out of gas, you worry the entire time as you watch that gauge drop further below the “E” line. You start realizing your car will be driving on fumes any second. And then your car stops working altogether because there’s nothing left.

Our lives are the same way. Sacrifice is a part of life, but we can’t sacrifice what’s no longer left. Eventually, our compassion… our love… our energy… our everything is going to fall below that “E” line, and all we’ll be left with is bitterness and resentment.

Take a break. Think about yourself once in a while. Realize that you’re no good to anyone else if you aren’t taking time for yourself.

Just some food for thought.
