Education :: Leading by Example

Though this post is labeled “Education”, I honestly believe this post can be for many different aspects of life!

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “Do as I say, not as I do.” Have you ever found yourself saying or thinking it?

If so, I’m not going to chastise you. That’s not my job. I will, however, say that it’s very hard for those who look up to us as role models to learn to do the proper things if we don’t show them how to do them.

In terms of students: how can they learn to respect us if we don’t respect them in return? How can we expect our students to learn processes the right way if we don’t show them how to do it properly?

We’re not role models if we’re not modeling the proper way things can happen.

You want to know the best thing I ever learned as a teacher? It’s okay for you to take a break too. I still remember a fellow teacher saying, “There was one day where I was just done. I was so angry! Finally, I called down to the office and asked for someone to come and be in my class for fifteen minutes. I looked at my students and said that I needed a break like they do sometimes. When I got back, my attitude was much better and the kids saw that it’s okay to be angry sometimes, but cooling off is the best choice.”

Those words will forever sit with me.

How are you modeling for your students and kids?
