Okay, so I never actually got to do this exercise, but I’ve seen it many times and it looks like so much fun. I’m sure you’ve seen it online and you may even give this assignments to your students!
Have them write how to do something. For instance: How to Make a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich.
You can, of course, start with something much simpler. The point is to have your students think through the process of doing or making something.
My challenge for you: let your students choose their own ‘how-to’ assignment! Some may choose to tell you how to create something in Minecraft while others want to tell you how to catch a fish.
What makes this even more fun is if it isn’t something you’ve ever done before. You may be able to guess how to do something the right way, but the bigger challenge is following their instructions fully. This will teach them how to truly analyze how something is done and how to teach others to do the things they love.
You can even give them an example of how to do the description correctly by walking them through how to do something. Don’t tell them what the finished product will be. See if they can follow your instructions fully.
If you have specific ideas, please share them in the comments! Your ideas will spark ideas for other teachers out there!
“See” you next week!
