I don’t know about you, but I can be a very selfish person. I become so inwardly focused that I miss what’s happening around me. I thought the picture above perfectly reflected (๐) exactly what I was imagining when I thought about what would be in this post.
Oftentimes, we see situations in our lives from our own perspectives. Don’t get me wrong, this is completely natural and expected as it’s very human. However, more often than not, it gives us a skewed view of what might be right in front of us.
It can even make us completely blind to the people around us.
Someone close to us may be struggling internally with something. We tend to take people at face value, or even simply at their word. We look at them and see what we want to see, or only hear the lies (of being okay or ‘nothing’) they give when we ask how they are or what’s going on.
When I have something big happening in my life, it’s hard to see outside of my circumstances. It’s easy to think I’m the only one struggling right now.
But that simply isn’t true. If we pull back from our immediate circumstances and truly look at the people around us, we’ll start to see the lies they’re hiding behind. We’ll begin to see the truth buried deep in their lives. We start to truly see them.
How many tragedies could have been avoided simply by someone taking notice and actually seeing someone rather than the mask they wear?
Sometimes it only takes a smile. Sometimes it takes a bit more.
When we stop being so inwardly-focused and look beyond our perspectives and seeing through the film of our circumstances, we just might change the world, even if it’s only for one person. And when we begin looking past ourselves? Well, it makes our immediate circumstances seem not so big and intimidating.
So will you look beyond yourself today and see the truth around you?
Now, I’m not saying that we can fix every tragedy or keep every single thing from happening. Because that’s just not how life works. As much as we want to save every person around us, sometimes we just can’t. But does that mean we shouldn’t try? I don’t think so.
