Hope :: Enjoy the Journey

Following my dad as he drove the tractor from one property to another

I think it’s safe to say that we all have life goals. I think we all have short-term goals too. The point is, we all have something we’re striving to reach; some end point for the particular season we’re in or for our lives as a whole.

Back in 2020, I didn’t know where my life was going. I was in a huge pause. I had just moved back home, not knowing why but knowing I needed to be there. During that pause, I had the opportunity to help my dad over at the family farm.

Honestly, had I not been in a ‘pause’ at that point in time, I don’t know that I would have been able to join Dad at the farm. We can always find excuses for why we can’t go somewhere or do something.

Because I was in a pause, I got to ride around with him in the tractor several times. I hopped out and cut the twine on the hay bales. I got to follow him in his pickup truck at a racing 12 miles per hour. At that speed, I was able to pull out my phone and snap a couple pictures of him leading the way.

I got to sink into the journey and enjoy it. For that drive, I had the end point of Nanaw’s property but focusing on the journey mattered far more than focusing on the end goal.

I didn’t know then that he would pass within a month of the pictures above. I’ll be forever grateful that I had no aim in my life then so all I could do was enjoy the journey.

Don’t be so busy making a living that you forget how to live. Work hard to be successful, but enjoy the journey.

David Cottrell

We get so caught up sometimes that we lose sight of living.

In our journeys, we meet a lot of different people and we build many relationships. If we don’t ‘stop to smell the roses’, those relationships suffer.

You don’t want to come to the end of your journey and realize you’re all alone.

“Attaining lasting happiness requires that we enjoy the journey on our way toward a destination we deem valuable. Happiness is not about making it to the peak of the mountain nor is it about climbing aimlessly around the mountain; happiness is the experience of climbing toward the peak.”

Tal Ben-Shahar

Success can be important (though it looks different for every single person), but we can’t allow our endgame to make us lose sight of the journey.

Goals lead us along an important path, but the journey is what teaches us life lessons along the way and make life worth living.
