Hope :: Starting with Goodbye

You may read that title and say, “Brittany, you’re contradicting yourself…” But stick with me a minute.

I was driving home from work the other morning and the song “Starts with Goodbye” by Carrie Underwood came on over Apple Music. I had never heard it before and I almost flipped it, but something told me to keep listening.

I’m glad I did, because it gave me the inspiration for this message!

The other night at work (I work at a hotel), one of our regular guests came up to me and the other girl working and started talking about his relationship. He mentioned how things just weren’t what they were supposed to be and that he felt really unhappy.

Then he said, “If you know what I should do, just tell me!”

I looked at him and said, “The only advice I can give is this: if those are your thoughts, then you probably already know what you should do.”

Why did I tell this short story?

Sometimes the next part – possibly the better part – of your life has to begin with a goodbye. You can’t move on to new things if you’re not willing to let go of the past.

Sometimes we have to let go of people. Sometimes a job. Sometimes an activity or habit or addiction or… the list goes on and on.

As Carrie says, “I guess it’s gonna have to hurt. I guess I’m gonna have to cry.”

Letting go of anything is hard. But sometimes, our future starts with goodbye.

What are you avoiding saying goodbye to today?
