Hope :: Why Do Bad Things Happen?

If you’re anything like me, you see the negatives in your life much easier than the positives. When bad things happen, I struggle to stay positive. Especially since I spend my time so carefully trying to help others and do the right things.

Then I look around at people who couldn’t care less about anyone else and are only about their own wants and needs – and I get upset. They (usually) have everything I want. They have the money, the amazing job, the awesome car… everything! Or so it seems to me.

Then I get jealous. I don’t mean to, and most of the time I don’t even realize that’s what’s happening within me. I just get upset that they have the things I want without doing anything ‘good’, while I’m over here working my butt off and the huge breakthrough still hasn’t happened for me yet!

So there’s all of that. Also included is the question that begins this post. Why do bad things happen?

I was a youth pastor for a time and that was one question that was asked over and over again. “I try to do the right things and I still have bad things happen to me! Why?!”

Simply – bad things happen because people make bad choices. Every single thing we do has consequences (both positive and negative) for the people around us. We like to think that because we try to not hurt others that they will return the favor.

Not every person considers that a positive thing for them could possibly be a negative thing for someone else. Everyone has free will and can choose what to do with their lives and with each situation that comes up in their lives.

This doesn’t mean you give up. It doesn’t mean you stop caring about other people. Guard your heart, my friend. Don’t close yourself off from the world at large, but be careful to choose to open your life up to those who will take as much care with you as you do them. Then, when bad things do happen, you have people you can turn to for support and encouragement.
