Hope :: In the Waiting

Many people standing at a terminal waiting for a train
Listen here!

Growing up, I was always told, “Don’t pray for patience. God will provide lots of opportunities if you ask for it.” So I haven’t prayed for patience in a very long time.

But that hasn’t kept me from seasons of waiting. And let me tell you, I’m in a huge season of waiting right now. I don’t like it.

What makes it even worse this time around is that I have a lot of possibilities. Right. There. I can almost taste them they’re so close. And yet, here I am, waiting. Nothing moving in any direction. Everything at a standstill.

It makes me want to scream. Or, more likely, curl up in a ball and cry. I’ve had so much good news, and yet, again, it’s all news for the future. (I’ll share more on this as soon as I know more and can share!)

The one thing in my life that is happening is my retail job. And it wasn’t great before. Now it’s becoming progressively worse, and in the waiting for everything else to happen, I’m becoming bitter and resentful.

This isn’t a good mental place for me to reside within, nor is it for you.

So, in the waiting, how can we make it a positive experience?

First, look around and see the connections you can make. There may be friendships that you didn’t expect or didn’t think to cultivate at first.

Second, take an inward look. What can you be working on inside yourself during this season of waiting?

Third, don’t buy into the lie that you’re a failure just because things aren’t moving yet.

That one word is the true word here. Yet.

Just because it isn’t happening right now doesn’t mean it won’t ever happen.

I’m 32 and single. I’m working retail as I wait for a job in my field. I’m writing in the hopes of becoming traditionally published.

I’m waiting, just as you may be doing. Life is difficult. Waiting is the pits. But if we start looking at it as an opportunity instead of a hardship, we just may find a little bit of hope in the waiting.
