Weekend Whispers :: 1 Samuel 14:6

Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armor, “Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that the LORD will work for us, for nothing can hinder the LORD from saving by many or by few.”

ESV

I read this verse recently, and it keeps coming back to me. How often do we feel like it’s “me against the world”? How often do we try to work everything out on our own and feel like we come up short?

When I read verses like the one above, I’m reminded that I can do nothing on my own. I can try over and over, but when I cut God from the equation, I’m cutting out the One who fights my battles for me.

In the story above, Jonathan and his armor-bearer worked together and attacked a large group of soldiers. Between the two of them, they killed 20 men. And the other men were frightened and fled. And it’s because they went with God and trusted Him to protect them and fight for them.

I’m not saying you won’t need to do any work, because God still called them to battle. What I am saying is that if you trust God to be with you every step of the way, He will always bring you through, whether you have a lot of support or just a little, or even none at all.

Dear God, thank You for always meeting me where I am. Thank You for taking up the battle when I have no more strength. Help me to remember to rely on You, and only You, when I’m facing the enemy. Giants have no power compared to You. In Jesus’s name, amen.
