Does it feel like every single thing you do seems to fail? Or that every single part of your life is wrong and just falling apart? More often than not, we get so overwhelmed by the negative things in life that we can’t even see a sliver of light.
I challenge you right now: write down every single positive thing in your life, no matter how small it might seem. If you want to wait until you’re finished reading, that’s okay too!
As you began writing down the positives, I bet you anything it was difficult. And probably nearly impossible. Did you start with things like “I got a day off school”, “I finished a project at school/work”, “I didn’t fail my last exam”, or “I found the paper I was looking for”? Or at least something along those lines, anyway.
Looking at the positives instead of the negatives is hard. It seems only natural for our attention to be stuck on the negatives. When we try to see the positives, the only things we can see are the really small things that seem almost inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.
I promise you: once you start noticing the little things, the negatives will start looking smaller and smaller. A lot of times, when we force ourselves to look beyond the negatives, we start to see that the negatives aren’t really as big as we imagined!
I’ve seen many ideas out there to help us focus on the positives every single day. I’ll be the first to say that I fail epically at each of these because I’ve never been one for any sort of daily journaling, but I will list these ideas for those of you out there who DO journal daily!
- Do a daily ‘positive post’ on social media
- Have a jar of positives – every time something good happens, write it on a slip of paper and put it in the jar to read through on bad days
- Fill a jar with encouraging quotes that you can randomly pull out when you need a positive thought
- Keep a journal where you write down the good, the bad, and the ugly every day
Please share YOUR ideas in the comments! Let us all help one another!

P.S. If you are a victim of abuse (physical, mental, emotional, sexual), I urge you to reach out to someone! Focusing on the positive doesn’t make these realities change and you deserve so much more than a life of abuse. You have my Facebook, Instagram, and email all here on my blog – I can be someone you can reach out to at any time!
P.P.S. If you struggle with anxiety and/or depression, sometimes focusing on the positives can help. Other times, it does absolutely nothing. I am in NO way saying – nor will I EVER say – that you should stop taking medication because the ideas I share here are better than medication. Absolutely not! Even if these ideas DO help you, you should NEVER stop taking medication without speaking to your doctor.
