“And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good deeds of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching.”
NLT
It’s very true that you can’t earn your way into heaven. You can’t bribe God by doing good things. There is only one way to heaven, and that’s through salvation in Jesus: His sinless life, death on the cross, and resurrection.
However, that doesn’t mean we’re to do no good outside of ourselves.
Jesus overflowed with compassion and helped everyone around Him. He knelt at the feet of the disciples and washed their feet, demonstrating a heart of servitude.
The New Testament is filled with calls to action. Paul, James, and Titus are well-known for encouraging life-giving action. James tells us that faith without works is dead.
When we accept the sacrifice of Christ, when our souls can rest safe in knowing we’re part of God’s family, we are called to become more like Jesus. This means that our hearts become those of servants. Our hearts are supposed to overflow with compassion. This compassion means that we connect with those around us and show them the same love Christ has for us.
Be an example of Jesus. Show others Who you belong to.
Dear God, thank You for sending Jesus. Please help me to remember to serve others. Give me a heart of compassion that reflects your love. Let me be an example for others. I pray these things in the name of Jesus, amen.
